|The 2007 PA Older Adult Spelling Bee was held on May 24, 2007 during the Prime of Life Festival at the York Expo Center.|
Twenty contestants throughout Pennsylvania competed in the Bee. Erin Marsicano from Sen. Waugh's office and Mayor John Brenner from York City gave welcoming remarks. The judges who officiated over the bee were John Bowman, a White Rose Senior Center Board Member; Faye KIrchner from Community Banks and Dr. Nina Grove, a professor at York College. The rules were read and Shannon Davidson from our local CBS 21 News was introduced as the Pronouncer for the 2007 PA Older Adult Spelling Bee. The Bee ended on the 252nd word in the Pronouncer Guide.
The following are the list of contestants, the county the represented and the placement in the 2007 Older Adult Spelling Bee Competition:
Phyllis Thompson York County 1st Place Winner
Nancy Lyons Delaware County 2nd Place Winner
Gay Massey Washington County 3rd
Patricia Ferrenberg Westmoreland Co. 4th
Ed Kunigonis Schuylkill County 5th
Thomas Williams Carbon County 6th
Peggy Dixon Bucks County 7th
Judith Keith Monroe County 8th
Argentine Deigh Montgomery County 9th
Audrey Ricker Luzerne/Wyoming Co. 10th
Audrey Digregorio Armstrong County 11th
Phyllis Emenhizer Clinton County 12th
Helen Kropiewnicki Columbia/Montour Co. 13th
Linda Clark Bradford/Tioga/Sullivan/ Susquehanna 14th
Wahneita Grimes Greene County 15th
Mildred Satterlee Somerset County 16th
Seba Raducz Butler County 17th
Elizabeth Paris Lycoming County 18th
Jill Smith Cumberland County 19th
Betty Andrews Crawford County 20th
Phyllis Thompson from York County won and Nancy Lyons came in second place. The two of them battled it out for numerous rounds and eventually Phyllis cam out on top!
Phyllis was given the opportunity to travel to Cheyenne, Wyoming to participate in the 2007 AARP National Senior Spelling Bee on June 15th and 16th, however, she was not able to make it so Nancy Lyons was the Pennsylvania representative.
Approximately one hundred contestants competed in the 2007 AARP National Senior Spelling Bee. To advance to the vocal part of the Bee at Nationals you must compete in a written part. Nancy told me that her paper had so many red check marks so she did not advance to the vocal part! The winner was Susan Hartner. Susan correctly spelled "bharal", a goat-like mammal from the Himalayas and waited while finalist Randy Hilfman struggled with "vizsla", a breed of Hungarian hunting dog. Susan traveled onto New York City and appeared on the CBS Early Show on June 16, 2007 for a mock spelling bee with the TV hosts.
The 2008 AARP National Senior Spelling Bee will be held on June 14, 2008 so the 2008 PA Older Adult Spelling Bee will be held prior to that. York County plans to host the event again next year so we will send information to your local Area Agency on Aging later this year.
We would like to thank the sponsors for the 2007 event. They were Community Banks and PASC (Pennsylvania Assocition of Senior Centers). Many local businesses contributed toward prizes. They were Brown's Orchard & Farm Market, Frito Lay, Inc., Martin Memorial Library, Martin's Potato Chips, Inc and the Prime of Life Festival.
Several volunteers helped to make this event a success and I would like to again thank them for their assisitance. They are Judy Parsons, the 2006 PA Older Adult Spelling Bee Champion, Kim Maglaughlin and the Delta Senior Center Members, Scott Shughart from Dillsburg Senior Center, Rose Altland and the Golden Vision Senior Center members, Beth March and the seniors from White Rose Senior Center, Beth and Frank Grove, Mike Inkrote, the York County Area Agency on Aging (YCAAA) and the YCAAA Advisiory Council.
This event is takes many hours of time to organize but is very rewarding in the end. As I stated many times throughout the Bee...Everyone who participated is a winner, even down at the local levels. It is extremely hard to get up in front of many people and spell words but at least you tried. Anything you can do to keep your mind active and alert makes you a winner! Congratulations to All!

|The official accreditation "Plaque", from the National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC) which in an arm of the National Council on Aging (NCOA), has arrived and is on display.|
Of the 15,000 senior centers in the country less than 1% have completed the self-evaluation process and received accreditation.
The hard work and determination of members of the board of directors, volunteers from the community, staff, and of course White Rose Seniors to complete the process is remarkable.
The effort to bring a center of excellance to York County clearly makes a strong statement about WRSC's committment to serve York County seniors.
The self-evaluation process was a community effort and we appreciate the support we recevied from the York Communty Foundation, Mt. Zion United Church of Christ, and Baltimore Life Insurance Company.
Many thanks to everyone who supported the accredtitation effort.
