Two Weeks at a Glance - May 11-22, 2020

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You for starting off May 1, 2020 with a BIG BANG! Give Local York was held on Friday, May 1, 2020. It was a huge online day of caring and giving for 305 York County Non-Profits. People were so generous with donations that broke the records from 2019! There were 11, 101 donors who raised helped to raise $3.551,930!!!

HOW DID WHITE ROSE SENIOR CENTER DO? Friends, members, and families of WRSC raised $10,001!!!. These funds will be used to continue operations at the Center in many ways such as, activities for the older adults and virtual programming and classes. COVID-19 has made many of us realize that we need better internet, more education on using technology, and more devices in the hands of our older adults to stay connected.

May is also Older Americans Month. Every May, the Administration for Community Living leads our nation's observance of Older Americans Month. The theme for 2020 is "Make Your Mark." This theme was selected to encourage and celebrate countless contributions that older adults make to our communities. White Rose Senior Center is planning a salute to the valuable volunteers who support White Rose Senior Center the last week in May. The next 2-week calendar will end on May 22nd but look for the following calendar (may 25-June 5, 2020) of what ways we will be honoring our WRSC Volunteers and letting all of them know how they have “Made Their Mark” at White Rose Senior Center!

As we are slowly opening up Pennsylvania under Governor Tom Wolf’s plan, people are asking us “When will we be able to return to White Rose Senior Center?” Our answer continues to be that, “We don’t have an answer. Your safety is our primary concern. We will continue to be here to serve take out meals, deliver home delivered meals, provide games and activities virtually, and offer a big smile when we see you!” The hot “Take Out Meals” are on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 10:30-11:30. On Wednesdays, persons 60 and over receive a frozen meal for Thursday and Friday. The 2nd & 4th Thursdays we offer Fresh Express Produce to WRSC Members and/or Broad Park Manor Residents. The Commodity Supplemental Food Box for Seniors will be distributed the 1st Thursday in June and Mobile Fresh Produce will begin in June too.

The Inside Aging (May 2020) report from Secretary Robert Torres at the Department of Aging came out today. He wrote about a survey conducted by the Pennsylvania Council on Aging that was completed in April by 3700 Pennsylvanians aged 60 and older. We all are concerned about social isolation and its impact on older adults. The results were interesting and quite in tune with what our desires are for the Give Local York fundraising effort that we completed last Friday. Some of the major findings are as follows:

  1. Older adults still engage with their communities, on average, almost twice weekly to get groceries.

  2. Almost 6% of the “oldest” older adults (91 years and older) reported that they still attended religious events.

  3. Fewer than 20% of the “oldest” older adults have access to smart phones, but more than 20% stated that they were interested in virtual connections.

The last paragraph in the Executive Summary Report sums it up as we move forward through COVID-19 and beyond: “Food access, social isolation and connectivity have and will continue to be issues affecting older adults’ well-being and quality of life; the responses drawn in real time during this pandemic present an opportunity to deepen policymakers’ understanding of these major issues and engage partners throughout our Pennsylvania communities in the development of thoughtful, creative and effective solutions.” Here is the link for the entire article: https://mailchi.mp/pa/inside-aging-march-4631393?e=bda3f42419

Month at a Glance for April and May 2020

As we continue to work Monday through Friday as “Essential Employees” to serve the older adults of York County, our White Rose Senior Center Members, and the Broad Park Manor Residents, we feel blessed to have a job that gives all of us a great satisfaction of helping others.

We are sending puzzles, games, information pieces about COVID-19 such as other food locations, making your own masks, and signs and symptoms of the Coronavirus. Month at a Glance - Second Part of April 2020

White Rose Senior Center remains closed to the public as do many places in Pennsylvania and across the United States. We are her providing “Take-Out Meals” to our senior center members or anyone 60 or over and delivering home delivered meals to our 125 recipients on Mondays. They are all receiving 7 frozen meals. “Take-Out Meals” are handed out on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 10:30-11:30. On these days the people are receiving a hot meal. On Wednesdays, they receive two frozen meals to be used on Thursday and Friday. The older adults must call or get on-line with copilot to pre-register their lunches. Jenna is working from home to call the pre-registered people to make sure they are coming on that day. Often we have people who did not pre-register and they must wait until closer to 11:15 to see if we have any left over.

As I am typing this post, this is the 17th working day that WRSC has been operating differently due to the Coronavirus Outbreak or COVID-19. Life has certainly changed, we have all found out things about ourselves such as what is most important and what we can do without. As we all continue to pray, continue to provide the best service that we can offer, and to be kind and patient with everyone we come in contact with, always remember, “We Will All Get Through This Together!”

White Rose Senior Center is participating in Give Local York on May 1, 2020 (12:00 am-12:00 pm). This is a fantastic on-line fundraiser where last year we raised over $11,000.00! Our goal for 2020 is $15,000.00! Every bit of money that is donated goes to support the entire operation and activities at White Rose Senior Center and is APPRECIATED by EVERYONE!

Give Local York 2020 put together a video that is on youtube called “We Are All In This Together”. We sent in pictures of some of our wonderful Home Delivered Meal Drivers and the White Rose Senior Center Staff. Click on the link below to view it!   https://video.search.yahoo.com/search/video?fr=yfp-t&p=give+local+york+video+we+are+all+in+ths+together#id=1&vid=284478f8a386f51c5b05cd5252747b25&action=click

Today we are getting Fresh Express from Central PA Food Box in Harrisburg. We are putting items in a box to distribute from 11:30-3:00. We are putting together 75 boxes so first come, first served of older adults (60 & over) or Broad Park Manor Residents.

As we receive our produce from Fresh Express and at the markets and grocery stores during the COVID-19 outbreak, we all need to know how to wash the fruits and vegetables properly. Here is a great article to help you out. Click HERE.

We still have a few April & May Commodity Supplemental Food Boxes for Seniors from The York County Food Bank.  Please come and pick them up if you receive it from us. If you are 60 or over, meet the income guidelines for your household, will bring your latest bank statement or your award letter from Social Security, as well as your driver’s license or PA ID. The current income guidelines are posted HERE.

We as Pennsylvanians have been asked by Governor Tom Wolf to wear protective face coverings. The staff is wearing them when we are dealing with the public and our members. We are asking all of you who come to the door to do the same. The masks are for your protection as well as ours. We have attached two links here for you to get instructions on how to make them by sewing or no sewing. These all provide items that you probably have at your house such as material, an old t-shirt, a bandana, rubber bands, elastic, or hair ties. The articles also let you knw how to wash these DIY masks by simply putting them in your washing machine as often as needed. To look at the first article from the CDC click HERE. Another article on making a DIY mask is available HERE.

We are trying to Social Distance every time you come to the Center to pick up your lunch, food boxes, Fresh Express, or to ask us a question. Social Distancing means staying 6 foot away from each other, no touching, hugging, or kissing! We all are feeling the loneliness of no touch and no hugs because frankly, many of us at White Rose Senior Center are huggers and kissers by nature. Please just blow a kiss and squeeze the air…we all feel it and look forward to the day we can reach out and touch someone but it is not now!!!

On March 27, Governor Wolf signed Senate Bill 422, which reschedules Pennsylvania’s primary election from April 28 to June 2 due to the COVID-19 emergency. Voters have the option to vote by mail-in ballot rather than going to their polling place on election day. Mail-in ballot applications will be accepted through Tuesday, May 26, 2020. If a voter has already applied for an absentee or mail-in ballot, they do NOT need to reapply.~ To obtain an Absentee Ballot in English click HERE. To obtain a Mail in Ballot click HERE.

We are doing a two-week calendar as we work our way through COVID-19. Click below on all of the April 2020 Calendars and Menu. Remember the menu and calendars are subject to change!

Month at a Glance - April 2020

The first comment we would like to make about March and April 2020 is that we hope you all stay safe and healthy due to the coronavirus pandemic. We are all praying for each of you and the entire World.

This pandemic hit York County and gained much notice beginning on March 6th. On Tuesday, March 17, 2020, White Rose Senior Center changed our meal service, including our congregate lunches at the Center as well as the Home Delivered Meals we serve. We began “Take Out Meals” from 10:30-11:30 Monday through Friday which went on until Friday, March 27th. Beginning the week of Monday, March 30th, we are offering HOT “Take Out Meals” on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. On Wednesdays we are giving the participants 2 FROZEN Meals for Thursday and Friday. We are limiting contact with others by going to 3 times a week.

“How do I get “Take Out Meals?”, you may ask. Call White Rose Senior Center at 717-843-9704 and place your order. To ensure a meal, you must pre-register 2 days prior to when you would like a lunch. If we have meals left over from somebody who pre-registered for a meal and they did not attend, we will offer it (in order) to whomever is still in line. Our numbers are growing the longer this pandemic lasts but we don’t want to waste meals either, so only sign up if you are going to come and get it please! If you are 60 or over, you may come and get a meal if we have any left. We will encourage you to get signed up as a member of WRSC and York County Area Agency so we get credit, keep track of the numbers and new people attending due to the virus, and you can continue to join in the fun after COVID-19 ends.

The Home Delivered Meal clients will receive 5 FROZEN Meals on Monday, March 30, 2020 and 2 FROZEN Meals on Wednesday, April 1, 2020. Beginning Monday, April 6, 2020, they will receive all 7 FROZEN Meals on one day. White Rose Senior Center is blessed to have awesome HDM Drivers and we even had a call from a new man who wanted to deliver meals after reading the York Daily Record article that Frank Bodani wrote about WRSC! Click the following link to read the article: https://www.ydr.com/story/news/heart-of-york/2020/03/19/coronavirus-pa-meal-wheels-drives-higher-calling-now/2869126001/. Welcome our newest HDM Driver, Richard Sindlinger, as a result of the article!

As far as programming with COVID-19, White Rose Senior Center has modified many activities, cancelled activities, cancelled the entire Spring Session of the STARS program with Springettsbury Township, created helpful service for you, prepared word puzzles, simple crafts, seed starter kits, Easter card making kits for you to do at home, used Facebook and played games like “Name the Lyric” and The Price is Right” on Facebook Live, created fliers to give you about food shopping hours for older adults, distributed fliers listing the symptoms of the coronavirus, distributed a modified box with staple items in a box for Fresh Express Thursday, March 26th and 27th (We still have 5 boxes for WRSC Members &/or Broad Park Manor residents), gave out fliers with HAND WASHING INSTRUCTIONS WHICH IS KEY  as well as trying to show you SOCIAL DISTANCING (what 6 feet apart) LOOKS LIKE BY DRAWING CIRCLES ON THE SIDEWALK WHEN PICKING UP YOUR “TAKE OUT MEALS”. With those circles on the sidewalk illustrating “SOCIAL DISTANCING”,  on many days, we play “Twister” and give away canned goods and items that we have on hand at the Center. We all love our jobs and are trying our very best to keep everyone safe while providing the food services that we are mandated to serve as an essential provider. We all appreciate the kind words you say and comments we see on our Facebook page. “We Are All in This Together!”

Click on the calendar and menu for April to see what we will be offering. The calendar is a 2-week calendar because we are putting the activities in English and Spanish on one sheet for easier distribution. REMEMBER: the calendar and menu are subject to change but we are trying our best to follow it one day at a time as well as The Nutrition Group who prepare the meals! We owe them a huge round of applause from the drivers coming to the senior centers, the preparers and the staff who order the food, the managers for their leadership and “hands-on” mentality at helping in every role, and the truck drivers still hauling the food all across the country (and the list goes on!).

NOTE: We are distributing the COMMODITY SUPPLEMENTAL FOOD BOX PROGRAM FOR SENIORS (Caja de Compra para abril y mayo) for APRIL & MAY on Thursday, April 2, 2020. Please come and get these!!! We hope the Federal Government does not close all/or any of the States but we need to prepare. If you receive the box from us, you will receive a call from The York Food Bank the week of March 30th to come to the Center and pick it up. The hours will be 9:00 AM-3:00 PM at the front door unless you drive (read further in this paragraph if you drive). If you are 60 or over and do not receive the box from us or any other agency, bring either your latest bank statement or your Social Security Award Letter that you receive in January from the government, PLUS your ID. If you walk, bring a cart for the 2 Boxes! If you drive, we will have signs/and a staff out directing you to pull around to the side door closest to E. Market Street, pop your trunk open and we will place both boxes  it in there. We will sign your name on the form. We are trying to limit exposure to others as much as possible.

We mentioned  in the 4th paragraph that we are offering helpful services for you. We have purchased some toilet paper, facial tissues, dish soap, aluminum foil, and paper towels that we are selling in our WRSC Pop Up Shop. These are selling for what we paid for it. Click on the WRSC Pop Up Shop Flier below for the prices.

Other fliers that have been distributed are listed below for you to click on and gather more information. Some have been compiled from fellow colleagues that we work with from other organizations. Remember the saying, “We Are All in This Together and We Will All Come Out of This Stronger”!!!

We are EXCELLENT at doing Facebook daily but as you can see by this lengthy post with a lot of great information, maybe not as up-to-date and I (Lisa) apologize for that. Things were changing constantly these past two weeks and Facebook was the easiest to get to daily. We  realize that not everyone is on Facebook or even our page. If you search on Facebook, type White Rose Senior Center (It may come up as Rose White), chose the one where people are their football sports jerseys. This is the one to follow for up-to-date information. The other one is the WRSC wooden sign. We abandoned that one a couple years ago.

Stay safe and stay healthy. If you are not feeling well, please do not come to the Center for any reason. Stay at home. If we get sick, the staff at WRSC that is serving you, we will not be effective at helping anyone! Call if you need assistance and hopefully we can help or direct you to somebody who can…We Are all in This Together!

Give Local York - Help White Rose Senior Center During the Give Local York Campaign Friday, May 1, 2020

White Rose Senior Center will participate in Give Local York on Friday, May 1, 2020. Last year we set our goal at $10,000 to raise and with many of you and many wonderful outside donors helped to raise $11,376.60 for White Rose Senior Center!

This year we have increased our goal to $13,000.00 and WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Things you can do are:

  1. Tell your friends and family to support WRSC on May 1st with a donation of any amount. We will have handouts to show you how to make the donation online that is tax deductible. You can give a check or cash and the staff can enter it to be counted on our site.

  2. The WRSC Board and Staff are arranging some restaurants and businesses who will allow us to attend and give a percentage of their profits for a certain time period. That information will be forthcoming.  Genova’s in West York has invited us to attend lunch their again. They are wonderful supporters!!!

  3. We will again offer a smaller version of Cash Bingo on Friday, May 1st like we did last year and have Raffle Prizes! So look at the calendar on May 1st, bring your money, play some bingo, win some raffles prizes and enjoy lunch at Genova’s!

  4. We would LOVE to send your family a letter talking about this huge fundraising event. Please give Lisa their name and address. I know many of your families appreciate you having a place to come to each day and would be willing to give a little something!

  5. If you know of a business or perhaps your family owns a company, share their name and address with Lisa and a letter will be sent out to them asking for their support.

  6. Please keep this in mind, all donations must be marked in the memo section of a check that the donation is for Give Local York on May 1, 2020.

  7. We (the Staff & Board) are open to ideas on how to make this another great event. This is the second year for WRSC to participate and the 3rd year of Give Local York’s inception. Last year, over 300 non-profit organizations received $3.2 million dollars by generous people in the community! Help make 2020 even mere awesome!!! ~
